Forrest Stillwell is a professional educator and a certified outdoor teacher. He grew up in Citrus County on the Gulf Coast of Florida. His passion for fishing began at the age of three in the ponds behind his grandmother's house. Over time, he graduated to fishing the saltwater flats near his hometown for tarpon, redfish, and trout, as well as the spring-fed clear rivers for bass and bream.

Forrest's first job was at Jack Wingate Fishing Camp for kids on the famous Lake Seminole in South Georgia. Teaching and coaching fishing has been a lifelong passion for him, leading to experiences such as trout fishing in Wyoming and exploring the remote islands of the Bahamas. He believes that teaching people to fish is even more rewarding than catching fish. Currently, he leads the Lawrence Academy Full Circle Fishing Winterim and teaches rod building.

Additional Information

Our passion for fishing and our desire to share our knowledge of the water and its various fisheries inspired us to create the New England Fishing Academy. Our mission is to introduce young people to the beauty of fishing and cultivate a genuine appreciation for the patience, focus, practice, and thoughtfulness required to become lifelong skilled anglers passionate about conservation and the outdoors. It is important to note that we have expanded and will be running camps at separate locations throughout the summer under the NEFA umbrella using the same format as we always have!  We want to bring more camps to more kids this summer!

Curriculum

While the most important facet of New England Fishing Academy is for our participants to become more proficient anglers, we also want them to have fun and to enjoy the outdoors.

There is a reason why it is called 'fishing' instead of 'catching'.  In other words, if fishing was easy then either everyone would be doing it or nobody would be doing it.  As a result, here at the NE Fishing Academy, we choose to focus on three main silos of instruction which include:

PREPARATION

  1. Understanding how the weather, the moon, time of day, time of year and tides effect feeding patterns.
  2. Gaining an awareness and an appreciation for various fisheries and ecosystems in order to determine what type of lures, flies or bait to use.
  3. Understanding rod and reel preparation.
  4. Knots...knots...and more knots!  Knowing how to tie certain knots is the most important aspect in helping to prepare for a successful fishing experience.

EXECUTION

  1. Importance of maneuvering a boat, kayak, canoe, float tube or oneself into the best position to then execute a cast.
  2. Most effective and efficient ways to cast a spin and/or a fly rod.
  3. Most effective and efficient ways to present a lure, bait or fly.
  4. Proper technique in setting a hook and reeling in a fish.
  5. How to properly handle a fish that has been landed and how to release the fish in the least harmful manner.

CONSERVATION

  1. Understanding the importance of being respectful and appreciative of one's surroundings and ecosystems.
  2. The importance of keeping invasive species such as milfoil (aquatic plant) and carp (species of freshwater fish) out.  Even rainbow trout can be invasive.
  3. Gain an understanding of how a food chain works and how plants, animals, insects, fish, etc. interact with one another.
  4. How plastics and other pollutants along with a lack of thoughtful awareness has negatively impacted our waterways.
